Truyền thông Campuchia cho biết cuộc biểu tình này do Phong trào sinh viên và trí thức (FCIS) tổ chức.
Những người biểu tình đòi một quan chức sứ quán, tham tán Trần Văn Thông, phải xin lỗi vì phát biểu rằng vùng đất mà họ gọi là Kampuchea Krom, từ lâu đã thuộc về Việt Nam.
Cuộc biểu tình sau đó bị cảnh sát Campuchia giải tán nhưng không có ai bị thương vong hay bị bắt. Ban tổ chức biểu tình nói một số người, kể cả sư sãi, đã bị đánh đập.
Khi được BBC phỏng vấn, ông Trần Văn Thông, tham tán chính trị ĐSQ Việt Nam, nói rằng cuộc biểu tình này là "trái pháp luật".
Ông cũng tái khẳng định: "Nam Bộ là lãnh thổ không thể tách rời của Việt Nam, được quốc tế và chính Vương quốc Campuchia công nhận".
'Lãnh thổ không tách rời'
Mao Pises, lãnh đạo FCIS, được dẫn lời cáo buộc ông Trần Văn Thông không biết gì về lịch sử khu vực.
“Ông Thông phải xin lỗi công khai về việc ông ta hiểu lầm về lịch sử Kampuchea Krom, mà nay là một phần của miền Nam Việt Nam."
Theo ông này, vùng đất đó đã bị người Pháp chia cắt cho Việt Nam khi kết thúc chế độ thực dân ở Đông Dương.
Về phần mình, ông Trần Văn Thông giải thích: "Pháp vào Việt Nam năm 1858, năm 1863 vào Campuchia".
"Khi vào Đông Dương, Pháp không cắt đất Việt Nam cho Campuchia và cũng không cắt đất Campuchia cho Việt Nam. Cho tới khi nhân dân Đông Dương đấu tranh giành độc lập, khi rút khỏi Đông Dương Pháp cũng không cắt đất Campuchia cho Việt Nam."
Vấn đề đất đai và các cáo buộc Việt Nam chiếm đất của Campuchia gần đây đã được một số đảng phái ở Campuchia thường xuyên sử dụng để chống quan hệ của Việt Nam với đảng cầm quyền CPP của Thủ tướng Hun Sen.
Một số người Việt sống ở Campuchia nói họ bị phân biệt đối xử và quan ngại về an toàn.
Tuy nhiên ông Trần Văn Thông nói chính phủ Hun Sen quản lý đất nước "bằng luật pháp Campuchia" và "tạo điều kiện cho người gốc Việt".
